Sowmya’s experience ranges from advising MNCs and large conglomerates on several matters (such as post-merger harmonisation and ‘Reduction in Force’ exercises, employee movements pursuant to corporate action, closure of factories) to evaluating the business models of start-ups changing the HR landscape of India. She has conducted negotiations with trade unions, handheld foreign entities who wish to hire from India, advised on employee secondments and transfers and prepared roadmaps for clients to transition to the requirements of the New Labour Codes.
In addition, she has conducted and led internal investigations, including those relating to disciplinary issues, misconduct, fraud, bullying and harassment at the workplace, as well as anti-bribery and corruption issues.
She has also worked on employee disputes (unlawful dismissals, maternity benefits, discrimination under legislation protecting the rights of persons with disabilities), founder and senior management disputes and litigation pertaining to social security matters (provident fund, employee state insurance and gratuity).
Sowmya also focuses on internal HR strategy (from a legal perspective) and on conducting trainings for legal and HR teams. She has drafted employee handbooks, policies and process notes, and enjoys being the sounding board for HR teams across sectors.
She has also recently advised a Government company on various aspects of service law for its permanent cadre.
